“Building Portraits” is a suite of elevation studies developed by Atelier Manferdini, the Award winning design office of Elena Manferdini, based in Venice CA. The title of the collection alludes to products of two distinct disciplines. The work claims a territory where these two mediums find a common ground, where pixels and vectors get closer in scale of perception.
The show suggests that artistic drawings are in the same spectrum as architectural production. After four years of experimenting how painterly techniques can be scaled to architectural spaces, Manferdini's research moved to find modes for abstracted drawings to become literal pictures of building facades. The collection exist simultaneously as architectural research and as autonomous artwork. This show supports the continued practice of thinking through drawing, not only as a didactic instrument, but a trigger of the imagination. The collection conveys a sense of immanence - which directs the mind to a reality not yet in existence.
Manferdini’s past exhibitions in Tokyo & London, have garnered her worldwide acclaim. Her expertise in architecture led to many academic roles and achievements, ranging from visiting professor positions at the University of Pennsylvania to becoming the Graduate Programs Chair at SCI-Arc in Downtown Los Angeles. Industry Gallery is excited to host “Building Portraits” in their new location in LA’s flower district January 30th, 2016.
